(34) David Bowie :: Modern Love

David Bowie :: Modern Love

There are so many Bowie songs that i like more.
So many.

However, this song is a gale force blast from the past hitting all my nostalgic pressure points.
My dad either loved this song, or played it a lot, or (just as likely) played it once or twice and my child mind stored it and saved it for this day.

I can't say for sure, I'll check with him and find out.

Regardless, i thought I'd share Bowie, and a little nostalgia all at once.

Also, Bowie's pasty skin + white hair is creepily awesome.

(33) Johnny Cash :: God's Gonna Cut You Down

Johnny Cash :: God's Gonna Cut You Down
I think it's safe to say that most people reading this blog have heard of Johnny Cash, the man in black, and if they haven't heard of him, they've likely heard him and don't realize it.

Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Walk the Line, and others are all commonly known and fantastic.

But... this song has something different.

It's a traditional folk song, also done under the title 'Run On'. To me, it shows Cash's introspection in his old age. Perhaps I'm just choosing to see it that way, but... perhaps not.

However, i can say this with certainty, the song rocks.

(32) Cake :: Frank Sinatra

Cake :: Frank Sinatra
So a lot of people are familiar with this band. Many own their albums. But for those of you who only here the 'most popular' tracks then this one is for you.

The trumpet in this track is good, the bass is good, the guitar is good (and fun to play) the drums are solid. It's an all around great cut. Plus it's a really chill song, something that you can just sit and drift off too.

It's the opening track to Fashion Nugget and it really sets the mood of the album.

If you've heard Cake before but have been wondering what their 'non-hits' sound like this is a good glimpse.

But don't take my word for it (i love you Reading Rainbow!).

(31) Modest Mouse :: Bukowski

Modest Mouse :: Bukowski
Everyone has heard Float On. This is better.

Kirk, a good pal and former co-worker of mine turned me on to this band. He even hooked me up with all their albums, and I'm slowly getting more addicted to them.

'All that icing and all that cake i can't make it to your wedding but I'm sure I'll be at your wake.' is my favorite line, i find it catchy.

Enjoy. Oh, and go read some Bukowski, he really is a pretty good read.

(30) Yasushi Ishii :: A Left Foot Trapped In A Sensual Seduction

Yasushi Ishii :: A Left Foot Trapped In A Sensual Seduction
I'm not generally one to watch anime nor am i one who generally encourages people to listen to anime theme music.

However, Yasushi Ishii does some cool Jazz-esque theme music for the anime series Hellsing.

I love it. I recently started re-watching the series (13 episodes) as i never actually finished the whole thing and for several years was missing episode 5-8.

So far i like it as much as i use too, and the score plays a huge role in that. A film (any film) with terribad music can ruin the whole thing, despite how good the content may be.

So give this jazzy Japanese sound a listen and tell me what you think!

(29) Lovage :: Strangers On A Train

Lovage :: Strangers On A Train
First an apology - my inter-webs went out on Wednesday, and still aren't up (exactly).

Second, Nathaniel Merriweather presets: Lovage, Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By, is one of the greatest albums ever created.

It's a sexy concept album with three major players. Nathaniel Merriweather is the one and only Dan the Automater (who has gotten his hands dirty with everyone from the Gorillaz to Glass Jaw). The primary male vocalist is Mike Patton, of Faith No More. The sultry vocals of Ms. Jennifer Charles are his accompaniment. Other talents are featured on the album as well, including the magnificent Kid Koala.

The entire album is sultry, sexy, and gets your libido pumping. Which I imagine was the intent.

Also an interesting factoid, several of the songs were named after Hitchcock films, including this one.

Grab some wine and i nice cigar and give it a listen.

(28) Max Normal - Hazel's Joint

Max Normal - Hazel's Joint
Today i have a real gem for you all.

Max Normal is a South African hip-hop artist. I discovered him by accident thanks to a series of street art and graffiti videos i was watching. He was featured in 'Hello from Johannesburg', which is a pretty wicked video if you want to check it out.

His voice is a little Eminem-esque at times and Fred Durst-esque at others, but the beats and cultural influences are distinctly, well, south african. To be fair his voice is only rarely Eminem/Fred Durst - esque ... but they are the most mainstream sounds i could relate it too. He's a whole different class of musical stylings.

Give it a listen and track down some more Max Normal, I promise you won't be disappointed.

(27) Crystal Stilts :: Prismatic Room

Crystal Stilts :: Prismatic Room

I figured out today why I like Crystal Stilts so much; it’s because, and this has happened a lot with music, every time I hear a certain song by them, I say to myself, who is this? I like it! And then, because I have satellite radio, I check to see who it is and it’s them again, and I castigate myself for being old and dumb and do it again a week later.These guys are not extraordinary but they do fit the pretty consistent criteria of what I like to listen to, and it’s usually guitar driven, droney wall of sound fuzzy and kind of blurry too.

When I was a DJ, I figured out something I thought was pretty useful and that I keep with me always. It’s a bit a of a mantra to get me through difficult periods.There will always be a new song to love. First you’ll hear it in the background of a club, or a movie soundtrack then it will be on the radio and it will have become something you have got to hear again and again, and ultimately you’ll tire of it as a constant and move on to the next one. Knowing that indeed there will always be more, has truly helped me to sustain.

This is a guest posting from Abby. Thanks for the contribution Abby!!

(26) Carly Simon :: Scarborough Fair

Carly Simon :: Scarborough Fair

Today is my mother's birthday, she's 29 for like the 18th time.

When i think back over the years, my mom is a music enthusiast, but completely casual. She can't pick artists out, or identify songs. Hell, when i would talk to her about classic rock bands that i love she'd say, "Oh yeah i think i saw them in concert, i dunno though, my friend had tickets."

However, one artist she's always loved (and could always identify) is Carly Simon. I haven't actually listened to her in years, so as i poured through a few tracks that i remembered i discovered this gem.

I love Simon & Garfunkel, and this rendition is stunning.

I hope you enjoy it!

(25) Mirah :: Garden

Mirah :: Garden
I first heard this song on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance.

I liked it so much that i bought the entire album off Itunes on the spot, without any research or listening.

The album is good, and i didn't waste my cash, but this song is hands down the best.

It's got such an awesome bass line that carries the song, then the crashing percussion that rockets it straight into your eardrums.

It's pretty rad.

(24) The Fifth Dimension :: Aquarius / Let the Sun Shine

The Fifth Dimension :: Aquarius / Let the Sun Shine

Admittedly, I've never seen Hair.

But i have seen 40 Year Old Virgin and actually just finished watching it (a heavily edited USA Network version of it).

If you haven't seen the movie, i apologize for the spoiler, but it ends in an Aquarius musical number; and it is F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C.

Love it.

(23) Ultrababyfat :: Crash Bang Highway

Ultrababyfat :: Crash Bang Highway
This Atlanta based band first caught my attention at Van's Warped Tour. They were on a small side stage with about 10 people watching them.

The slayed it. All 10 people loved them. I bought a CD on the spot, and a T-Shirt, and got some autographs while i was at it.

They seemed like really cool, down to earth folks.

I'm still waiting for them to do more, but as far as i can tell they only have their one album from 2001.

I suspect most folks haven't heard them, but give them a listen, you'll have to dig to find more of their music as YouTube doesn't have much, but if you really like them, let me know and I'll upload some videos myself.

(22) The Black Angels :: Young Men Dead

The Black Angels :: Young Men Dead
This band was recommended to be by a dear friend with an eclectic music taste (who is hopefully doing a guest write up for me right now!!).

I was floored when I first heard them. In a hypnotic daze i went from video to video, song to song, listening and sustaining a new found hunger for their rhythmically, bluesy noise.

After doing a (very) limited google search i discovered that they've played shows with the Black Keys, which excited me because both bands tickle a certain musical nerve of mine. I also found that they've been on several sound tracks, including being featured on Fox's Fringe, a show i enjoy from time to time.

Also - if you're interested in skate video's at all, there is a pretty good one with this track dubbed over it, i found it to be a great song choice, but the background sounds took away from the song itself.

(21) Daft Punk :: Around the World

Daft Punk :: Around the World

What happens when you get two French guys who like to wear robot suits together in the same room? They make great music! Daft Punk is a French Duo who compose very catchy, simple, highly repetitive, yet very fun, electronic music. And yes, they actually do wear robot suits while performing and during interviews. Why you might ask? Well here's one of their explanations:

"We did not choose to become robots. There was an accident in our studio. We were working on our sampler, and at exactly 9:09 a.m. on September 9, 1999, it exploded. When we regained consciousness, we discovered that we had become robots."

Around the world was their biggest hit off their 1st album, Homework. The video for Around the World is a highly choreographed dance, involving Spacemen, Mummies, Synchronized swimmers, Skeletons and Breakdancers. If that doesn't scream "Watch Me" then I don't know what does. Each group of dancers is a physical representation of the 5 instruments used to make up the song.

So check em out...you just might like em.

(20) Flogging Molly :: Devil's Dance Floor

Flogging Molly :: Devil's Dance Floor

In honor of today, St. Patrick's Day, I've added Flogging Molly's Devil's Dance Floor from their Drunken Lullabies album.

If you haven't heard them you should kick yourself. Then listen to them.

They combine punk rock and traditional Irish folk music with David King's magnificent voice for the best Irish punk sound possible.

If you ever get a chance to see them live... DO IT!

I've seen them 3 or 4 times, and they get better every time. They are the only band that can still get me in a pit (I'm old and busted now, so pits aren't really my thing.)

While i don't normally do this I feel obligated by my internal need to share music with you; David King's wonderfully Irish voice use to be the front man for a horribly awesome metal band called Fastway, you can hear them here, the sounds are worlds apart but show his diversity.

(19) Joan Jett & Paul Westerburg :: Let's Do It

Joan Jett & Paul Westerburg :: Let's Do It
I love this song! It's one of the songs I was turned on to by my older (teenage) friends in the neighborhood, when i was about 11 years old.

This version is from the Tank Girl soundtrack.

Admittedly I've never watched nor read any Tank Girl, but the song rocks regardless.

Joan Jett is flippin' awesome!

You should all listen to more of her, not just this song or the one B. Spears covered.

(18) Yeah Yeah Yeahs :: Poor Song

Yeah Yeah Yeahs :: Poor Song
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs rock really hard. Maybe you've heard them? Gold Lion got crazy radio play and Maps was on Rock Band (the video game).

But you should listen to more of them, the other songs.

This track here, Poor Song sometimes referred to as Porcelain, is the secret song off of their 2003 album Fever to Tell.

Secret song or not it is so incredibly, undeniably, unequivocally awesome!

Listen to it, and love it.

(17) Bette Midler & Bing Crosby :: Accentuate The Positive

Bette Midler & Bing Crosby :: Accentuate The Positive

As i said before, my father has done a wonderful job of getting me addicted to Jazz.

This song, music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Johnny Mercer, has long been one of my favorites!

This version has one of Bing's last performances, and with the lovely Bette Midler!!

If more people listened to happy music while driving, you'd have less accidents and road rage.

It's Science.

(16) Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott :: Daydream

Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott :: Daydream (Live on Letternman)
Dope. That's what this song is, dope.

I really dig it. I often listen to it on repeat, turned up really loud, while I'm washing dishes.

It's Lupe Fiasco (obviously) a prominent hip hop artist and Jill Scott (obviously) a prominent R&B artist sampling from IMonster's Daydream (which was a cover of the original Wallace Collection's song of the same title).

The progression just gets me so pumped up!

I also really appreciate the way Lupe raps about contemporary social issues, and how he slips it into all his music and onto radio. Learn more about that here.
Definitely on my list of "to-see-live".

(15) Bad Religion :: Atomic Garden

Bad Religion :: Atomic Garden

This is another suggested band from by buddy up in Minnesota.

Admittedly i am not the biggest Bad Religion fan, however i do like this song and have a nostalgic story to accompany it.

When i was in high school attending i happened upon a CD, not sure how it got into my collection, with no case. So i had no idea what it was. But i liked it.

On the CD the words "Anger, Fear, Sex, Death" were written. The first track on the album was this one, which i really dug. Some people i shared it with guessed that it may be Bad Religion but no one was ever certain.

So upon receiving the suggestion of Bad Religion I googled around a bit and found this song, discovered it was indeed the song i loved off of the mysterious CD i own, and posted it.

Enjoy.

(14) Murder By Death :: Brother

Murder By Death :: Brother
Today at work i sent out a text to several friends with various musical tastes (most differing from mine) asking them to name 3-5 bands they would want other people to listen to.

This band was one of the responses i got.

Described to me as a "...a western sort of noise rock, vocals like Johnny Cash, a cello, ect."
I was sold on description alone! I checked um out, not to much non-live recordings available for free on the inter-tubes (or specifically YouTube). But the studio cuts (and home made videos to studio tracks) were all really solid.

A lot of the comments on the live videos said that they were a great band to catch live... and i believe it. These guys are on my watch list of bands too see.

This song is off of their 3rd release; 2006's In Bocca Al Lupo.

All-in-all, thanks for the suggestion. They rock.

(13) The Horrorpops :: Walk Like A Zombie

The Horrorpops :: Walk Like A Zombie
This group is rockabilly... except not. They are relatively unique and thus damned to the "sub-genre" game. So they are pychobilly or punkabilly... or whatever label someone wants to apply to them.

Bottom line, they rock, with an upright bass; and who doesn't love an upright bass... i know i do!

(12) The Black Keys :: I Got Mine

The Black Keys :: I Got Mine
Song number 12!
12 is my lucky number and has been as far back as i can remember.

For the 12th song i chose the Black Keys who kick so hard I want to buy some extra speakers just for them and turn them up even louder.

This song 'I Got Mine' was an instant favorite the first time i heard it. It's off their new album Attack and Release.

Oh and if you didn't know they are from Akron, Ohio. NEO represent.

(11) Anthrax & Public Enemy :: Bring The Noise

Anthrax & Public Enemy :: Bring The Noise
Anthrax is a Metal Band.
Public Enemy is a Rap Group.

Scott Ian of Anthrax was a big Public Enemy fan, and would wear a Public Enemy shirt on stage.
Chuck D of Public Enemy took notice of Ian's shirt and referenced Anthrax in his rhyme.

Together they pioneered the genre of "rap-rock" or "Nu Metal" or whatever the hell you want to call it 3-4 years before any other band started to use it as their own styling.

I think it's an impressive show of genre b(l)ending, something that needs to happen more in music.

(10) Charlie Hunter ft. Norah Jones :: When The Day Is Done

Charlie Hunter ft. Norah Jones :: When The Day Is Done
I really dig this song, and have unfortunately been able to find it (for free) anywhere but YouTube.

Charlie hunter is a jazz musician who loves dabbling with other artists and in other genres; he has a whole concept album with hip hop artists!!

Norah Jones is a real jazzy/pop artist. The sort of traditional jazz vocalist who has penetrated the mainstream.

The song is a Nick Drake song. I like Nick Drake quite a bit and expect to see him on this listing again.

(9) Brand New :: I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spin Light

Brand New :: I Will Play My Game Beneath The Spin Light

So today i just pulled up the ole' Itunes and hit the shuffle button.

This came up. Sort of. This band came up, and i chose this song to share instead of the shuffled song.

I like this band a lot, they range from pop punk to indie punk all with heavy emo overtones (whatever that all means).

But they are a guilty pleasure, i just really enjoy them, always have.

No fun factoids about them though, I'm to lazy to wikipedia them, and I don't know anything off the top of my head, just read the YouTube comments, I'm sure there is something!

(8) Green Day :: Hitchin' A Ride

Green Day :: Hitchin' A Ride
or THIS live link if the above is broken (as the above may be copyright infringement).

So this post means 1 week has passed... 7 songs.

Last night i thought i knew what song i was gonna use for today, but then at work i got pounded with some great 90's jams that really drudged up some nostalgia.

Sometime between 2000-2002 (i don't remember) i saw Green Day and the Living End in concert and they put on a kick ass show.

Only show I've ever been to where the band (Green Day) stopped mid way through a song when they saw someone fall over in the pit and got the guys around to help the person up. It was a beautiful sort of punk rock camaraderie (or something like that).

This song is one of my favorites, and in my honest opinion really exemplifies the Green Day style, before they got overtly political (ie. Anti-Bush) in their music.

Which I of course prefer, because come on, who wants to hear about politics everywhere... including in your 'me time' music?

(7) Esthero :: Heaven Sent

Esthero :: Heaven Sent
I don't know jack about this artist.

She's Canadian (so says wikipedia).

She's "trip-hop", a term i often use to describe jazzy electronic mellow music.

This song rocks though!

One of my favorites of all time.

She has some other tunes that are good... but this one is leagues above the rest, as far as I'm concerned.

(6) The White Stripes :: Hotel Yorba

The White Stripes :: Hotel Yorba

So, I'm a big White Stripes fan, if you didn't know.

One of the few good contemporary bands that are well known (even if not well loved) in the main stream.

Hotel Yorba is off of their White Blood Cells album and is a terrific little number.

It's upbeat and catchy.

Learn to love it, more from the White Stripes next month to be sure.

(5) Diana Krall :: Peel Me A Grape

Diana Krall :: Peel Me A Grape (Live)

My father turned me on to Diana Krall, and thanks to that i got the pleasure of seeing her perform live. She is fantastic.

I hated this song when i was a "pre-teen" ... wasn't fond of the 'whipped' mentality of the song.

But now ... it's just a sexy song.

The link for this song is a live rendition, it's a little quite on the audio so you'll need to adjust your volume more then normal to enjoy it. Loud is always better as far as I'm concerned.

(4) Junior Kimbrough :: Lord, Have Mercy On Me

Junior Kimbrough :: Lord, Have Mercy On Me
This blues tune from Junior is stunningly haunting. It's just under 10 minutes and never feels long enough.

I first heard this song from a Black Keys cover, which is amazing. But i wanted to share the original in all it's splendor.

I could play it on repeat all day and just sit, and listen.
