David Bowie :: Modern Love
There are so many Bowie songs that i like more.
So many.
However, this song is a gale force blast from the past hitting all my nostalgic pressure points.
My dad either loved this song, or played it a lot, or (just as likely) played it once or twice and my child mind stored it and saved it for this day.
I can't say for sure, I'll check with him and find out.
Regardless, i thought I'd share Bowie, and a little nostalgia all at once.
Also, Bowie's pasty skin + white hair is creepily awesome.

Johnny Cash :: God's Gonna Cut You Down
I think it's safe to say that most people reading this blog have heard of Johnny Cash, the man in black, and if they haven't heard of him, they've likely heard him and don't realize it.
Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, Walk the Line, and others are all commonly known and fantastic.
But... this song has something different.
It's a traditional folk song, also done under the title 'Run On'. To me, it shows Cash's introspection in his old age. Perhaps I'm just choosing to see it that way, but... perhaps not.
However, i can say this with certainty, the song rocks.

Cake :: Frank Sinatra
So a lot of people are familiar with this band. Many own their albums. But for those of you who only here the 'most popular' tracks then this one is for you.
The trumpet in this track is good, the bass is good, the guitar is good (and fun to play) the drums are solid. It's an all around great cut. Plus it's a really chill song, something that you can just sit and drift off too.
It's the opening track to Fashion Nugget and it really sets the mood of the album.
If you've heard Cake before but have been wondering what their 'non-hits' sound like this is a good glimpse.
But don't take my word for it (i love you Reading Rainbow!).

Everyone has heard Float On. This is better.
Kirk, a good pal and former co-worker of mine turned me on to this band. He even hooked me up with all their albums, and I'm slowly getting more addicted to them.
'All that icing and all that cake i can't make it to your wedding but I'm sure I'll be at your wake.' is my favorite line, i find it catchy.
Enjoy. Oh, and go read some Bukowski, he really is a pretty good read.

I'm not generally one to watch anime nor am i one who generally encourages people to listen to anime theme music.
However, Yasushi Ishii does some cool Jazz-esque theme music for the anime series Hellsing.
I love it. I recently started re-watching the series (13 episodes) as i never actually finished the whole thing and for several years was missing episode 5-8.
So far i like it as much as i use too, and the score plays a huge role in that. A film (any film) with terribad music can ruin the whole thing, despite how good the content may be.
So give this jazzy Japanese sound a listen and tell me what you think!

First an apology - my inter-webs went out on Wednesday, and still aren't up (exactly).
Second, Nathaniel Merriweather presets: Lovage, Music To Make Love To Your Old Lady By, is one of the greatest albums ever created.
It's a sexy concept album with three major players. Nathaniel Merriweather is the one and only Dan the Automater (who has gotten his hands dirty with everyone from the Gorillaz to Glass Jaw). The primary male vocalist is Mike Patton, of Faith No More. The sultry vocals of Ms. Jennifer Charles are his accompaniment. Other talents are featured on the album as well, including the magnificent Kid Koala.
The entire album is sultry, sexy, and gets your libido pumping. Which I imagine was the intent.
Also an interesting factoid, several of the songs were named after Hitchcock films, including this one.
Grab some wine and i nice cigar and give it a listen.

(28) Max Normal - Hazel's Joint
Max Normal - Hazel's Joint
Today i have a real gem for you all.
Max Normal is a South African hip-hop artist. I discovered him by accident thanks to a series of street art and graffiti videos i was watching. He was featured in 'Hello from Johannesburg', which is a pretty wicked video if you want to check it out.
His voice is a little Eminem-esque at times and Fred Durst-esque at others, but the beats and cultural influences are distinctly, well, south african. To be fair his voice is only rarely Eminem/Fred Durst - esque ... but they are the most mainstream sounds i could relate it too. He's a whole different class of musical stylings.
Give it a listen and track down some more Max Normal, I promise you won't be disappointed.
